Collins River Timber Frame

An older cabin on the banks of the Collins River caught the eye of the Bakers and inspired them to create a retreat for their family and friends. To complete their dream of a gathering place, Homestead Timber Frames was contacted to design and build an oak timber framed great room addition in order to view the river below and to satisfy their love of natural wood and handsome surroundings.
The Bakers delighted in pounding in the last wooded peg that secures all the timbers together for their Great Room. That’s right – no nails are used in this massive structure. Our crew of four joiners which built the frame in our shop over the course of five weeks also raised this frame in five days. Afterwards the Bakers celebrated by having “dinner on the grounds” with neighbors and family. Project Manager, Bruce Gardner was asked to speak on the history of traditional timber framing that covers thousands of years and can be seen today all over the world.
It’s nice to work with clients who appreciate building in concert with nature. The Bakers wanted local building materials and chose native stone for both fireplaces as well as our native hardwoods for the timber frame and flooring. They envision this home melding with their surroundings and created porches and large windows to take advantage of their views – even high up in the trees.
